Take care when selecting an electrician
Electrical work is one of those trades where you can't easily judge the quality of what you're paying for. So here's what we commit to on every single job, whether it's a 20-minute fix or a full rewire.
We turn up
If we book you in for a time, we're there for that time — not "sometime between 8 and 4". Your day matters as much as ours.
You get it in writing
A clear written quote before any work starts. Always know what you're paying for — no verbal guesses, no creeping invoice.
Honest advice
We'll tell you what the job genuinely needs, not what's quickest to sell. If something can safely wait, we'll say so.
We respect your property
Dust sheets down, mess cleared up, your home or premises left as we found it. Every visit, without being asked.

Why a local electrician matters in Alton and Hampshire
Alton and the villages around it are a real mix, and the wiring underneath them is too. There's a lot of older period and cottage property out towards Bentworth, Chawton, Medstead and the Candovers where we still come across rubber and cloth-insulated cable, wooden-backed fuse boxes and lighting circuits with no earth. All fine in their day — well past it now. After twenty years working on these houses you get a feel for what's behind the wall before you start cutting into it.
Then there's the newer estate housing around Basingstoke, Chineham, Kempshott, Fleet and Church Crookham, where the work is more often extra sockets, downlights, EV-ready supplies, kitchen and extension power, and boards that need bringing up to current regs. Different job, different approach.
A good chunk of our patch is rural, too — barn conversions, outbuildings, workshops and garden supplies where damp, distance and cable routes all matter. Outdoor sockets and anything in an outbuilding need specifying with proper IP ratings and RCD protection, not just whatever's cheapest off the van. And with the rental market round Alton and Basingstoke being what it is, EICRs and landlord work are bread and butter — letting agents know they'll get the report and the certificate without chasing.
That's the advantage of a local sparky who actually knows the area: we're not driving in from the other side of the county, we know the housing stock, and we're close enough to come back if you need us.

Questions we get asked a lot
Do you charge for quotes?
No. Quotes are free and there's no obligation. You'll always get a written quote before any work starts, so you know exactly what you're paying for — no verbal guesses and no surprises on the invoice.
Are you a registered electrician?
Yes. Wessex Electrical Services is Part P registered with NAPIT, a Registered Competent Person, a Which? Trusted Trader, TrustMark registered and Trading Standards approved. We're fully insured and every job is certified and notified where it needs to be.
What is an EICR and do I need one?
An EICR (Electrical Installation Condition Report) is a full inspection of the fixed wiring in a property. Landlords in England legally need a valid EICR at least every five years, and they're well worth doing when buying, selling or renovating so you know the condition of what you're dealing with.
Do you cover commercial work as well as domestic?
Yes. We work for homeowners, letting agents, landlords and businesses — installations, maintenance, repairs, testing and fit-outs across Alton and Hampshire.
Do you take on small jobs?
Yes, and we do them properly. A lot of electricians won't turn out for a single socket or a faulty light. Small jobs are something we specialise in — same standard of work and the same certification as a big installation.
What areas do you cover?
We're based in Alton and cover the surrounding Hampshire towns and villages — Alresford, Four Marks, Medstead, Bordon, Basingstoke, Fleet, Hook, Odiham, Farnham, Petersfield, Winchester and many more. If your village isn't on the list, ring and ask.
How quickly can you get to me?
It depends what's already booked in, but we cover a tight local patch rather than driving across the county, so we can usually get to you quickly. Ring and we'll tell you honestly when we can be there rather than promising something we can't keep.
What are your opening hours?
Monday to Sunday, 7.00am to 7.00pm. Leave a message outside those hours and we'll get back to you — your call matters to us, and we WILL respond.
